When Is The Best Time To Take Maternity Photos?

Maternity session photographed around 30 weeks

One of the most common questions I get from expecting moms is: “When should I schedule my maternity photos?”

While There’s no one side fits all answer, I do have a sweet spot that works beautifully for most pregnancies- between 25-30 weeks.

Why 25-30 Weeks is the Ideal Time for Maternity Photos

By this stage, your bump is clearly visible—but most importantly your body usually still feels comfortable enough to move around, post and enjoy the session.

Most moms in this rage:

• Have a defined bump

• Can still move and pose comfortably

• Feel more like themselves

• Aren’t dealing with as much swelling or exhaustion

From a photography standpoint, this timing allows us to capture that flowing, expectant look while keeping the experience relaxed and enjoyable.

What Happens If You Wait Too Late?

While maternity photos can absolutely be done later, many moms who wait until 34-38 weeks find that:

• Swelling becomes more noticeable

• Energy levels are lower

• Posing feels more physically demanding

• Scheduling becomes trickier as baby’s arrival approaches

This is why I often recommend planning a little earlier—so you can enjoy the experience without feeling rushed or uncomfortable. If you fear you’ve waiting too long, I still want to hear from you. If my schedule allows for it I will always make room for you!

Planning Ahead Matters

Maternity sessions tend to book up quickly, especially during the spring and fall. I recommend reaching out during your early second trimester.

Planning ahead allows time for outfit coordination, location selection, and creating a calm, meaningful session experience.

Final Thoughts

Your maternity photos aren’t about perfection, they are about celebrating this season of anticipation.

If you’re unsure when to schedule, Im always happy to help you decide. Together, well choose a time that captures your bump beautifully!
